Rebeca Bollinger was born in Los Angeles, California, and received her BFA in Painting from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1993. She is on the faculty at California College of the Arts in San Francisco and divides her time between San Francisco and Tucson, Arizona. She is the recipient of a SECA Award from SFMOMA, the James D. Phelan Award in Video, a Eureka Fellowship from the Fleishhacker Foundation, a National Endowment for the Arts grant (1999), and an Artadia Award (2001). Residencies include Headlands Center for the Arts (1996), Loyola University New Orleans (1998), and the Center for Cultural Innovation (2014). Her work has been reviewed in Artforum, Flash Art, the New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, Sculpture News, Art Papers, New Art Examiner, the San Francisco Chronicle, and Artweek. She is included in Radical Light: Alternative Film and Video in the San Francisco Bay Area, 1945–2000 (UC Press, 2010).
Bollinger’s practice encompasses sculpture, drawing, photography, writing, sound, installation, sculptural projections of light and video, cast instruments, improvisational music, binders, and books. Her ongoing project Catalog of Stains uses archives as source material and as conceptual framework: the Catalog is the container, and the Stains are the artworks and ideas within it — memories, objects, incidents, imprints. Her work fluctuates between flat space and objects, painting and sculpture, the material and the immaterial, exploring relational spaces between dualities such as ordered/jumbled, psychic/psychological, and presence/absence. She was among the first artists to work with computer-generated voice (using Apple PlainTalk’s Victoria: High Quality) as an artistic medium, in her 1994 video Alphabetically Sorted.
