Christopher Robin Duncan was born in 1974 in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and has lived and worked in Oakland, California for many years. He received his BFA from the California College of Arts and Crafts in 2003 and his MFA from Stanford University in 2013. He runs LAND AND SEA, a small press publishing books and records, with his partner Maria Otero. He is represented by Rebecca Camacho Presents in San Francisco and Halsey McKay Gallery in New York.
Duncan's practice is built around an original process: he drapes store-bought fabric over objects or architectural structures and leaves it exposed to sunlight outdoors for six to twelve months, with no chemical treatment — only time and solar exposure. The fabric is placed and harvested on full moons. When returned to the studio, the sun-bleached and weathered fabric is cut, sewn, painted, or stretched, creating works that occupy a liminal space between painting and photography. His sonic practice involves lush, tonal compositions made with harmonica, tuning forks, percussion, and ocean field recordings, often performed in candlelit rituals. He has also begun working in ceramics, producing instruments, vessels, and functional objects.
